February 28th, 2020. My last day of work. It wasn’t the day I originally planned to retire, but my employer had other ideas.
18 months earlier the firm I’d spent half my life working for, merged with a much, much larger organization. Those of you who have worked in the IT field for any length of time can probably guess what that means. The larger company had their own systems and didn’t need, or want, any of ours. So for the last year and a half I’ve been involved in a project to integrate five offices into the other companies network, followed by the decommissioning of two data centers.
Friday it all came to an end and I’m okay with it.
After more than 40 years of doing IT work for other people it’s time for me to do it for myself, for fun.
